Two members of a gang who imitated police officers to steal money from tourists have been jailed.

Romanian nationals Gabriel Pana, 50, and Alexandru Tudor, 38, of no fixed abode, presented fake ID to tourists and demanded they hand over their wallets or purses.

They pretended to search the items, stealing money or credit cards in the process.

On one occasion Pana stole a credit card and was able to persuade the victim to hand over her PIN number. CCTV showed Pana and a second suspect leave the scene and immediately using a cash point nearby.

The gang, of around 10 men, carried out the thefts from November 2013 to July 2014 in Southwark, Kensington, Chelsea and Camden.

Police are appealing  for help in locating another two men who failed to appear in court and identify six suspects who were allegedly involved in the scam.

Niculae Stan, 58, and Larenitu Stan, 38, were charged with conspiracy to steal and failed to appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court on September 2.
