EXCLUSIVE We spend £380million a year on foreign prisoners THE true cost of keeping foreign criminals behind bars is revealed today as more than £380million a year.
Statistics from the Ministry of Justice also show one in 20 thieves jailed between April 2013 and March 2014 was Romanian, a total of 1,032.
Romanians were also responsible for the highest number of burglaries (153) and fraud cases (142) among those jailed in the same period.
Some 10,319 inmates in the UK in September were born elsewhere, 12 per cent of the total prison population.
The Government spends an average of £37,000 on keeping an inmate for a year,according to the Howard League for Penal Reform.
At this rate keeping the current crop of foreign criminals inside for a year would cost Britain £381,803,000.
