THREE Romanians from Rotherham are alleged to have worked their way along the east-coast of the Highlands, attempting to defraud shops and supermarkets, including two in Sutherland.
The trio, Ion Muntean, 20, of Heatherly Road, Rotherham; 28-year-old Dorel Muntean, and co-accused, also named Dorel Muntean, aged 22, both of St Anne’s Road, Rotherham, faced ten charges, when they appeared from custody at Wick Sheriff Court yesterday.
The charges allege that they tried to obtain extra cash through the pretext of asking retailers between Alness and Thurso – including Nisa in Golspie and the Spar store in Helmsdale – to exchange money, during which they deliberately brought about confusion.
They are further accused of obtaining £40 at one shop and £100 at another to which they were not entitled.
The three, who pleaded not guilty, were remanded in custody by Sheriff Andrew Berry pending their trial on May 30.
